India Dismissed The Special Status Of Kashmir

Today Indian home minister made an announcement in the parliament to revoke the special status of Kashmir. ”The day is the darkest day in the history of Indian democracy,” said Mehbooba Mufti former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. India has dismissed article 370 of its constitution which have created tensions in the region. There are several reasons for the dismissal. Indian’s government always wanted to have an authority in the Muslim majority areas of the region. After the revocation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir will exercise the same rules and laws as other Indian citizens’ follow, the Indian government said. Indian Government has also added to bring a bill in support of splitting the state into two territories, Jammu and Kashmir.

It has also been reported that two big leaders Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are also house arrested before the announcement. India has also sent thousands of troops in Kashmir to take control of the backlash. Moreover, internet service has been suspended, the public is unable to move freely, therefore school and colleges were also closed. Although India’s opposition party is also against the BJP’s decision.

Article 370

According to Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir owns a special status of having its own constitution, a flag and can take defense-related decisions by themselves. This was considered as temporary provisions in the constitution of October 1949. Later in 1954 constitution, an amendment was made in the Article 370, article 35a added in the constitution; according to the article, Jammu and Kashmir have the right to decide about the permanent residents, right of getting Government jobs, educational scholarships, and the right to buy property on the state. Whereas non-permanent citizens were not allowed to settle down and acquire benefits like permanent residents. They could not purchase any property or land. They were also not allowed to get government jobs.

Pakistan’s take on the issue

Pakistan reaffirms it's abiding commitment to the Kashmir cause and its political, diplomatic and moral support to the people of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir for realization of their inalienable right to self-determination. 2/2 https://t.co/f6zBVKeoMJ

Pakistan’s government has strongly rejected the decision. Many artists from the industry have tweeted against the decision and showed solidarity with Kashmiri people. Ministry of foreign affairs also added that Kashmir is a disputed state and they will take all the possible actions to withdraw the decision. In a press release ministry of foreign affairs condemned the act as an illegal unilateral step of India’s government. It has also been reported that COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa also called a corps commander meeting on Tuesday to look over the illegal move of India.
